A #Thriveinlife obsession
To some, the tradition of camping could not be less appealing. To others, it is the ultimate way to unwind and go adventuring at the same time. Who knows what it is that compels us to pack a bag full of the most minimal amount of things we would need to cook, sleep, and stay warm and head off into the wilderness, it's just an instinct that we can't ignore. We were meant to be outside under the open blue sky, not cooped up in fluorescent lit offices behind computer screens. So often it is the case in this screen-centric, inter-web connected world that we need to put that time in to make a living. Camping gives us the opportunity to re-connect to nature while we disconnect from our in-boxes.
Every year, as the summer nears closer, booking a campground for those coveted weekends away becomes a priority. What nook of the province should we explore this year? What site did we love last year that we absolutely must return to?
There are all levels of camping, from the elaborate, “Glamping” sites with blow up mattresses and BBQs to the back country adventurists who sleep under the stars and have a cook stove the size of their palm. Whatever your flavour is, some common themes are always present when you get out there.**
Rebooting: Even if you miraculously have an internet connection, camping is a great justification for letting all your troubles melt away and being in the moment. No matter how hard we try to stay balanced, it is easy to get caught up in the stress of checking off the items on that never ending To Do List. Sometimes we need a place that can offer us a blank slate so we can re-focus on what our priorities really are and where our energy should be going.
Connection: Nature has a pulse, and if you don't keep your finger on it, you loose that sense of grounding that it can offer you. There is just something about hearing nothing but the wind and the rustle of tree tops or the crashing of waves that slows your heartbeat, draws you in to a place within yourself where calm lives, and brings you peace. You feel that gentle hand of the environment guiding you to really notice your surroundings, the different colours and sounds and types of life. Despite all the things we have created to protect ourselves from the natural elements, we are biologically programed to want this bond and can feel a little lost without it, not knowing what it is we're missing.
The Unexplored: All humans have a sense of adventure innately ingrained in our DNA, whether we choose to exercise it or not. That is how our entire planet came to be populated with persons from all over the globe. For us camping buffs, there is something that makes you tingle with adrenaline at the prospect of exploring an area you've never been, or even better, where no one has ever been. But it is not just the physical, but the mental and emotional crevices you have not explored that you may come across while out in the boonies. Whether you are sitting atop the summit of a mountain in silence or pounding the trails, it is amazing the clarity you can find when you throw yourself into the wild. You might challenge yourself in a new way and realize an ability you didn't know you had, or even discover a passion that could change the direction of your life.
If you are looking for a few beautiful spots to bump up your agenda for the summer, take a look at a few we can vouch for in BC:
Horne Lake Caves – For the more adventurous! The caving experiences alone are worth it.
Strathcona Park – One of our breathtaking Provincial Parks. Lots of hiking and tons of other recreation. Budding nature photographers will have a portfolio full when they leave.
Tofino – The surfers paradise of Vancouver Island. Make sure to pack multiple towels, you'll want to be out in those waves all day.
Sombrio Beach – Along the Juan De Fuca trail, this is a place where you can wake up on a secluded beach with the ocean at your fingertips. Also known to induce spontaneous friendships and campfire sing-a-longs (when there is no burn ban!).
Desolation Sound – For the more nautically inclined campers. Many areas are accessible by boat only. It is a must for avid kayakers. (see image below)
